Christiena Maria (Riana) van der Bank has enriched herself with a range of legal qualifications including inter alia, a BA (Cum Laude), BProc, LLB, LLM, and an LLD
in which she researched "The Borders of the Freedom of the Press in South African Law".
Riana was admitted to the High Court of South Africa as an Advocate in 2001. She joined Vaal University of Technology in 1996 and became an Associate Professor
in 2004 and received a full professorship in 2011.
Riana currently serves as the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences and is very involved in a number of committees at Vaal University of Technology as
well as external professional bodies such as the National Patent Examination Board. She is also a senior fellow of the World Business, Marketing and Management
Development Organisation. In 2008 she was recognised by her peers as one of the top 2000 intellectuals in academia in the world.
Professor van der Bank has presented papers and participated in three national and 16international conferences and also chaired numerous conferences and seminars.
Riana has published nine books and written numerouschapters in a number of other books. Her publications' focus is on human rights and labour law. She is the author
of a chapter in the Handbook of Urbanisation and African Cultures with the title of "Law, Change, Human Rights, and Development in South Africa". Her current research
interests include constitutional law, labour law, human rights, human trafficking and law of contracts.She has also published widely in journals.
She also serves as the Chief Editor of the Journal of law and Conflict Resolution as well as other journals. She has collaborated with Kingston University in the
UK in terms of recurriculation and entrepreneurship. Her hobbies include travelling, art, reading and she relaxes by attending live sport matches or by watching
sport on TV. Riana is a dedicated and loving mother and she values her family as core to her happiness and life.
