Employment
Employment in the formal manufacturing
sector has shown a declining tendency
for the last decade. Note that this
has certainly been influenced by the
trend in many businesses to outsource
activities such as cleaning, security
and business services.

Unemployment
and Employment by Sector
The Labour Force Surveys of Statistics
South Africa give a new picture
of employment based on interviews
with households in all regions of
the country. They provide the best
estimates of unemployment and are
able also to estimate the size and
distribution of the informal sector.
This is a new statistical series
and care should be taken before
drawing conclusions from comparisions
with other data and with earlier
surveys.
