Employment in the formal manufacturing sector has shown a declining tendency for the last decade. Note that this has certainly been influenced by the trend in many businesses to outsource activities such as cleaning, security and business services.

Unemployment and Employment by Sector
The Labour Force Surveys of Statistics South Africa give a new picture of employment based on interviews with households in all regions of the country. They provide the best estimates of unemployment and are able also to estimate the size and distribution of the informal sector. This is a new statistical series and care should be taken before drawing conclusions from comparisions with other data and with earlier surveys.
