Growth

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
GDP is the sum of all expenditures on goods and services in SA, plus goods and services exported, minus goods and services imported. Click here to see a measure of the overall size of the economy.

The growth of the economy is most conveniently measured by the percentage change in the GDP.

GDP per capita
GDP divided by the number of the population shows the amount of wealth generated per person. GDP can rise, while GDP per capita is falling. This happens if population growth exceeds GDP growth. Change in GDP per capita is a crude measure of development - as it says nothing about how the wealth is distributed between people.
