Director-General Tshediso Matona Mr Tshediso Matona was appointed Director-General of the Department of Trade and Industry from July 2006. His appointment follows 10 years of service in the department. He became Acting Director General of the dti in April 2005 and served in that position until June 2006. He was appointed Deputy Director-General of the International Trade and Economic Development division in 2002, a position that he held until his appointment as acting Director-General.

Before that, he held various managerial positions in the department, including that of trade negotiations from 1995-2002. He also served as a trade diplomat in the South African Mission to the UN and WTO in Geneva from 1996-1998. Prior to his career in the public service, Matona pursued an academic career at the University of Cape Town that included a stint as trade policy and politics researcher from 1987-1993. Current Position Director-General of the Department of Trade and Industry of the Republic of South Africa since July 2006. Career/Memberships/Positions/Other Activities

• Led the dti's, International Trade and Economic Development Division (ITED) as the Deputy-Director General for a period of three years.
• Represented the dti in intergovernmental and government clusters, and currently serves as the co-ordinator of the Economic Sector cluster and a member of the Forum of South African Directors-General (FOSAD).
• Served as a task team member on the Presidential Team for the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGI-SA).
• Served as an expert on the World Health Organisation Commission on Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and Public Health.
• Member, Trade Law Center (Tralac) Advisory Board, since 2005.
